Every year I tell myself the cat doesn't need a Christmas present. Every year I'm wrong. You'll spend an hour wrapping something lovely, and your cat will climb into the empty box and look at you like you finally got it right.
So here's my guide to Christmas gifts for cats that they'll actually use, plus a few for the cat lovers in your life. I've sorted everything by budget, added the safety stuff nobody else mentions, and kept it short enough to read on your phone in the checkout line.

Cat Stocking Stuffers Under $15
Small gifts are where cats shine. An $8 toy will often beat a $60 gadget, because cats have no idea what anything costs and frankly don't care.
A stocking of their own
Our mini Christmas cat stocking comes with any initial from A to Z, a paw print or a snowflake. It's about 5.5 by 7 inches, which is the right size for a toy and a few treats.
If you have more than one cat, get one each. Lined up on the mantel, they make a very cute photo, and it settles the "whose treats are these" debate before it starts.
Catnip toys for kicking and biting
Plush catnip toys are the classic for a reason. Our catnip chew toys come as small kitty bites, striped animals and a crinkly goose for cats who like to wrestle.
- Kitty bites: small and light, easy to carry around the house.
- Striped animals: longer, perfect for bunny-kicking.
- Geese: the biggest, for cats who wrestle their toys like prey.
One honest note: not every cat reacts to catnip. Sensitivity is inherited, and young kittens usually ignore it. If yours shrugs, it'll probably still chase the toy.
Christmas Collars and Costumes for Cats
This is the section for the holiday card. Keep it short, sweet and on your cat's terms.
Bow tie collars
A Christmas bow tie collar is the easiest way to dress up a cat who won't tolerate a hat. Ours comes in 19 patterns, from red buffalo check to snowflakes, with a little bell you can take off.
Always pick a breakaway buckle. It pops open if the collar snags on something, so your cat can't get stuck. You should be able to slip two fingers under it.
Santa hats, reindeer hoods and bibs
Our Christmas cat hat and bib comes as a reindeer hood, a Santa hat, a Christmas tree hat, or a bib for shy cats. Hats come in two sizes, S for cats up to 9 lb and L for 9 to 16 lb.
My rule: treats first, hat second, photo fast. If your cat flattens its ears, freezes or tries to back out, take it off. The bib is the gentler choice, and nobody needs a grumpy cat in the family photo.
Gray cats, by the way, look ridiculous in red. Ridiculously good, I mean. That silver coat was made for holiday colors.
Cozy Gifts for Cats Who Nap All Winter
Most cats sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, and winter makes them even more serious about it. A warm bed is the gift they'll use the most.
- A covered or bolster bed: cats feel safer with walls around them. Our indoor cat bed works well in a quiet corner, away from the holiday chaos.
- A grooming session: winter coats shed too. A gentle brush, like our 3-in-1 steam cat brush, doubles as one-on-one time.
- A cardboard box: free, and it will be the most popular thing under the tree. Don't fight it.
Shy cats especially love a hiding spot when the house fills with guests. If yours is the cautious type, my post on what shapes a gray cat's personality has more ideas for helping them feel safe.
Christmas Gifts for Cat Lovers
Shopping for the person rather than the cat? Pick something they'll see every day.
- Home decor: our rustic Meowy Christmas wooden sign has three cats in Santa hats, with a gray one front and center. It's about 8 by 6 inches and comes ready to hang.
- Something for their cat: a personalized cat collar with their cat's name engraved. It's thoughtful and useful if the cat ever slips out the door.
- A stocking with their cat's initial: a small gift they'll hang up every year.
Shopping for someone who just adopted a gray kitten? Pair the gift with a link to our list of 500+ gray cat names. New owners are always stuck on the name.

Holiday Safety for Cats
Christmas is fun, but it's also the season of emergency vet visits. A few small changes prevent most problems. These come from the ASPCA's holiday safety tips.
| Hazard | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Tinsel and ribbon | Swallowed strings can block the gut and need surgery |
| Lilies | Can cause kidney failure in cats, even in small amounts |
| Mistletoe and holly | Can cause stomach upset, mistletoe rarely worse |
| Poinsettia | Only mildly irritating, but still keep it out of reach |
| Tree water | May contain fertilizer and bacteria, so cover it |
| Lights and batteries | Chewed wires shock, punctured batteries burn |
Skip tinsel entirely if you have a cat. Put breakable ornaments up high and anchor the tree if you have a climber. You probably do.
If you think your cat ate something toxic, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 right away.
When to Order for Christmas Delivery
Order by December 8 for Christmas delivery in the US. Holiday shipping gets busy, and personalized items need a little extra time.
Ordering an engraved collar? Double-check the spelling of your cat's name before checkout. "Mittens" and "Mitens" are two very different cats.
Christmas Gifts for Cats FAQ
What is a good Christmas gift for a cat?
Something that matches how your cat plays or rests: a catnip toy for hunters, a cozy bed for nappers, a stocking full of treats for everyone. Cheap and simple usually wins.
What do you put in a cat's Christmas stocking?
A small catnip toy, a few of their favorite treats, a crinkle ball or a feather toy. Skip anything with strings, ribbon or small loose parts.
Do cats like Christmas presents?
Cats don't understand gifts, but they love new smells, new toys and especially the wrapping paper. Supervise unwrapping and throw away ribbon right after.
Are Christmas costumes safe for cats?
Short photo sessions with a light hat or bib are fine for most relaxed cats. Never leave a costume on an unsupervised cat, and stop if your cat seems stressed.
Are Christmas trees safe for cats?
Mostly, with precautions. Anchor the tree, cover the water, skip tinsel and keep glass ornaments and lights out of reach.
What is a good gift for a cat lover?
Decor with a cat theme, a personalized collar for their cat, or a stocking with their cat's initial. Gifts that include their own cat are always a hit.
A Very Meowy Christmas
Here's the secret about Christmas gifts for cats: the best one is your time. Ten minutes with a wand toy, a warm lap on a cold evening, a slow blink across the room.
The stocking is lovely. The bow tie is adorable. But your cat will remember that you sat on the floor and played. Then they'll go sleep in the box.
